Abstract

Aim: This overview aims to explore the specificity, challenges and current advancements in Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) application in implant dentistry.

Methodology: Recent literature from January 2010 to January 2024 was comprehensively reviewed, focusing on the utilization of PEEK in implantology. This review encompassed databases such as PubMed and Scopus to ensure a thorough examination of the available literature during this period. Studies examining PEEK implants' biocompatibility, mechanical properties and clinical outcomes were analyzed to provide a comprehensive overview.

Results: PEEK demonstrates outstanding properties making it an appealing choice for dental implantology. Its resilience, strength, tooth-colored appearance and compatibility with bioactive materials contribute to its increasing demand. Despite its higher cost, PEEK's benefits, including lightweight, toughness and durability justify its use in dental applications. PEEK exhibits trauma and shock-absorbing capabilities, fracture resistance, stress distribution and osseointegration making it ideal for dental implant prostheses. Its versatility extends to various dental applications, including dental implants, abutments, fixed and removable partial denture frameworks.

Conclusion: PEEK emerges as a promising biomaterial for dental implants, offering a comprehensive solution due to its exceptional properties and compatibility with bioactive materials. While challenges exist, such as its relatively high cost and manufacturing complexities, the benefits and advantages of PEEK are superior to these limitations. Continued research and innovation in PEEK technology hold the potential to further enhance its applications and revolutionize dental implantology.
